Mount Gongga is the highest mountain in Sichuan province of China. People praise it as “The King of Sichuan Mountains”. Tibetans call the mountain “Minya Konka”. The mountain is in the Daxue Shan mountain range. And it is between Dadu River and Yalong River. Besides, it is also part of the Hengduan mountainous region. The mountain is the most eastern 7,000 meters (23,000 ft) peak in the world. It is also the third highest peak except the Himalaya/Karakoram after Tirich Mir and Kongur Tagh.
The Mount Gongga scenic zone was established in 1996. Meanwhile, it gained the national nature reserve reputation in 1997. The whole area occupies 10,000 square kilometers (about 3, 861 square miles). It is the the largest scenic spot in China. Furthermore, there are 4,880 species of plants and over 400 species of plateau and forest animals living in the thick forests of the mountain.
The scenic area includes over ten plateau lakes such as Mugecuo, Wuxuhai, Renzhonghai and Bawanghai. Among them, some are at the foot of the glaciers while others are in the forest. The area also boasts some famous hot springs like Kangding Erqiao Hot Spring and Hailuogou Hot Spring. Except that, several Tibetan Buddhism lamaseries like Gongga Lamasery and Tagong Lamaseryare are also around.
Mount Gongga is also famous for its 159 glaciers with an area of over 390 square kilometers (about 151 square miles). The famous glaciers includes Hailuogou Glacier No.1, Kunba Glacier, Bawang Glacier, Yanzigou Glacier and Mizigou Glacier. Among them, Hailuogou glacier is the largest formed 1,600 years ago.
