Beijing(Mandarin:北京), formerly recognised as Peking,is the capital of the People’s Republic of China.It is the world’s second most populous city proper and most populous capital city. Located in northern China, the city is directly controlled under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts.Beijing borders Hebei Province with the exception of neighboring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.

As a megacity,Beijing combines both modern and traditonal architecture,rich in history and exemplified in its global influence in politics, economy, education, history, culture, and technology. History of Beijing can date back three millennia. Being one and last of the Four Ancient Capitals of China,Beijing has been the political center for the past eight centuries.The city was thought to be the perfect location for the imperial capital due to surrounding the inner city from three sides and the old inner and outer walls.For much of the second millenia A.D,Beijing had the largest population in the world.It attracts lots of tourists from home and abroad for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates.Beijing is also the cradle of culture and art in China with seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, as well as parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.The city’s traditional housing style -siheyuans,hutongs and the narrow alleyes bettwen the siheyuans in urban Beijing are main attractions for tourists.Beijing hosted 2008 Summer Olympics and was chose to be the host of 2022 winter Olympics as well.

On rankings of universities,Peking University and Tsinghua University are top 60 universities in the world.91 universities from Beijing are considered best in China.Beijing also took top place in terms of Global Fortune 500 company headquarters.

1.Great wall

As one of the "Eight Wonders of the World" and World Heritage,The Great Wall was built to drive off invaders as well as keep the inhabitants.It spans five provinces from Shanhaiguan Pass in the east to Jiayuguan Pass in the west.The Great Wall in Beijing located in suburban areas, including the well-preserved Badaling and Mutianyu, the renovated Juyonguan, Jinshanling and Gubeikou is most famous.It takes 1-2 hours by car from downtown Beijing .

The Great Wall in Beiijng is 573 kilometers long .Ming Dynasty( 1368-1644)is the last dynasty to engage in construction and built walls in Pinggu, Miyun, Huairou, Yanqing, Changping, and Mentougou,as long as 526 kilometers (327 miles).

2.Forbidden City

The splendid Forbidden City ,surrounded by a moat six meters deep and ten-meter high wall,is the biggest and best-preserved imperial complex in the world with 9,999 rooms.The number represents 'Divine Perfection'.The palace has been served as administrative center of the country for five centuries.

3.Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is the largest city square in the world.It is not only the city's symbol but also China's.The enormous square is surrounded by lots of significant edifices such as the Tiananmen Tower, Great Hall of the People, Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, Monument to the People's Heroes and National Museum.

Historical Sites

There is a variety of Hutongs and Courtyards in Beijing.The Prince Gong's Mansion where an offical and then a prince lived is the most magnificent courtyard.Other than that,there are the Bell and Drum Towers, Liulichang Cultural Street for people interested in Chinese calligraphy, painting or other artwork and the Lugou Bridge with incredible stone lions.

Imperial Gardens & Mausoleumsgraphy

The well-preserved Summer Palace has an area of 727 acres.Additionally,there are Beihai Park and the destroyed Old Summer Palace.The emperors built their marvelous mausoleums,among which,the Ming Tombs of the 13 emperors are considered most spectacular.


Because of religion,lost of beautiful temples were built to show imperial power.The Temple of Heaven where holds annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest  is the largest complex in the country.The Altar of Earth ,at the opposite,is used to worship the God of Earth.The Great Bell Temple was used to pray for rainfall during Qing Dynasty.

Since people from different places live in Beijng,it makes the food culture versatile.Peking Roast Duck and Imperial Court Food are representitve food of Beijing.People say you must do two things when in Beijing:eat Peking Roasted Duck and visit the Great wall.The duck is perfectly roasted with bronze color,crispy ,tender and succulent.Dozes of restaurants serve the duck.However,the most famous are Quanjude and Bianyifang.

Beijing ,as the vital transportation hub of air,rail and road,serves travelers at thier best convinience.China's biggest airport and rail systerm are both here.Additionally ,there anre many many national roads and expressways radiate.


There are two international airports in Beijng: Beijing Capital International Airport ,about about 25 kilometers (about 16 miles) from Tiananmen Square and Nanyuan Airport ,and Beijing Nanyuan Airport,about 13 kilometers (about 8 miles) from Tiananmen Square.Ground transportaion around both airport is available.


With a central place of China's railway system,Beijing offers trains all over the country to most cities.The main lines are Beijing-Kowloon(HK)(Jingjiu Railway ,Beijing-Shanghai(Jinghu Railway) and Beijing-Guangzhou(Jingguang Railway) and Beijing-Harbin(Jingha Railway ).Passengers travel to Tianjing ,Guangzhou and Shanghai can also take inter-city railway,which is far more faster than normal railway.


The subway line ,built in 1969,makes Beijing the first city in China to have subway.Nowadays,there has been 19 lines running with a a total mileage of 574 kilometers (367 miles) in the city up to 2017.Because of traffic jam here,subway becomes the main means to get to work.

Long-distance Bus

There are 20 coach stations bound for Tianjin, Zhangjiakou, Xian, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Harbin and Suzhou. And you can also find ten major ones in the city center like Liuliqiao Passenger Transportation Junction, Bawangfen Long-distance Bus Station, Lianhuachi Bus Station, Dongzhimen Long-Distance Bus Station...

More than 1,200 routes,including regular downtown lines, suburban lines, night lines and intercity lines.,are available.You can pay by cash or Transportation Smart Card.


Around 130,000 taxis  are running everyday in the city,allowing passengers to go anywhere they want to.


Cycling rencently has become more and more popular in China,especially among big cities like Beijng.It not only saves time of walking ,but also does good to environment.You can find 55,000 public bicycles in the urban and suburban areas.People,with age over 18 and below 65 and height over 4.3ft can easily rent at the rental site using a Transportation Smart Card.Furthermore,you can also download a bike sharing app,a new trend in China, such as Mobike, ofo, and CoolQi to use the dockless bike along the roadside.


Rickshaw is a good way to experience old Beijng ,travelling around the Hutongs.The rickshaw pullers offer history and culture lessons while going through these narrow lanes in English or Chinese depending on their language abilities.They usually charge CNY20-30 per person with 20-30 minutes and tips of  CNY5-10 should be ok.If you want a professional tour guide speaking Japanese,English and other foreign languages,you can also find one in the Hutongs.And it takes 2.5 hours and costs 200-250 CNY.Sometimes the fare is more expensive because of holidays.
