Welcome to explore Sichuan province, China!
Sichuan is a province in southwest China. People used to call it Szechuan. This place occupies most of the Sichuan Basin and the easternmost part of the Tibetan Plateau. It is one of the most populous province in China. Its capital city is Chengdu. There are many famous attractions there including the world’s main panda bases.
Sichuan means “four rivers” in modern Chinese. It refers to the province’s four major rivers-the Jialing, Jinsha, Min, and Tuo. Actually, the name of this province is a contraction of the phrases:四川路(Four River Circuits) and川峡四路(Four Circuits of Rivers and Gorges). It indicates the division of the existing imperial administrative circuit into four in Northern Song dynasty.
The most important historical period of Sichuan is Ba and Shu Kingdoms. Ba extended to Sichuan from the Han Valley in Shanxi and Hubei down the Jialing River. Shu covered the valley of the Min including Chengdu and other areas of western Sichuan. There was not so many historical records of the existence of early Shu. Shu’s history mainly existed in a mixture of mythological stories and historical legends. Chronicles of Huayang in the Jin dynasty recorded something about Shu. However, the discovery of Sanxingdui in Guanghan eventually exposed the highly developed civilization of an independent bronze industry.
