Jyekudo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture

Jyekudo (Ch Yushu) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is situated in the southwest region of Qinghai Province. Historically, Jyekudo was the home to Qiang, an ancient tribe in northwest China. Later, Jyekudo Special District established in 199, then changed to Jyekudo Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1955. Until now, it has become a famous tourist attraction with a long colorful ethnic culture.

For its physical feature, Jyekudo is on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau with most of the region 4000 meters above the sea level. Besides, the prefecture enjoys a continental plateau climate with high altitude and cold climate as its most outstanding features. As for the best travel time, you’d better choose to go during summer time.

Traditional Horse Racing Festival in Amdo Kham

Speaking of the Horse Racing Festival, almost every resident will take part in it. Also, nomadic families and monks from the surrounding monasteries will dress in their red robes. At the same time, there is an opening parade of horsemen, floats from the monasteries. In particular, one of the most popular programmers during the festival is Tibetan dancing. Generally, you can soak up in the enthusiastic atmosphere and greet by local Tibetan People.

Day 01: Arrive in Ziling (Xining)
Welcome to Xining, transfer to your hotel and get settled.

Day 02: Sightseeing in Ziling.
View spot: Tibetan Medical Museum and Gunlung Monastery.

Day 03: Ziling – Kumbum monastery – Tsonyongbo (Qinghai Lake) – Chabcha.

Day 04: Chabcha – Yushu.

Day 05: Sightseeing in Yushu.

What you can expect

Day 01: Arrive in Ziling (Xining)

Welcome to Ziling, transfer to your hotel and get settled.

Day 02: Ziling

In the morning, visit the largest Tibetan Medical Museum. In the afternoon, visit Gunlung Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Qinghai.

Day 03: Ziling - Kumbum monastery – Tsonyongbo (Qinghai Lake) – Chabcha

Visit Kumbum, one of the six largest Gelupa sect monasteries in Tibet. It was founded in 1560 by the great master Rinchen Tsondru Gyaltsen to commemorate the birth place of Tsongkhapa, the reformer of Tibetan Buddhism and founder of Gelupa sect. Drive to Qinghai lake, the largest salt lake in China. Afterwards, drive up a hill to take in the sunset over the lake.

Day 04: Chabcha - Jyekudo (Yushu)

Today is a long day driving through the rolling Amdo grasslands and visit a local Tibetan nomadic Yak hair made tent on way.

Day 05: Jyekudo

Drive or hike up to Jyegu monastery, located on a hill top behind the town. Visit Gyana Mani Stone Pile, a huge pile of stones carved with Tibetan Buddhist prayers (The mantras of Compassion Buddha). There are always good opportunities to take photos of locals pilgrim around the Mani Stone but respectfully or permitted.

Day 06: Horse Racing Festival Site

Today is the opening day of the horse racing. Nomadic families and monks from the surrounding monasteries dressed in their red robe and finery drive or ride into the camping ground and set up their tents for the festival. Every one dressed in his or her best chupas and jewelers. Drive to the horse racing ground to watch the races. In the afternoon see traditional Tibetan dances from different regions of Yushu.

Day 07: Horse Racing Festival Site

Watching yak racing, traditional Tibetan fashion shows, as well as watching the various activities it is very pleasant to stroll round the fair and meet the local people who often generously invite you to tea and delicacies in their tents

Day 08: Horse Racing Festival Site

Watch religious dances performed by monks and other activities.

Day 09: Jyekudo - Zhachukha - Manigango

Drive 350km to Manigango, a very small and simple town as most of Tibetan houses are built with timber. Many nomadic families come here for shopping and to taste different food in this town which brings you a strong feeling of old post. On the way we pass Sershul monastery and one of the three important Nyingmapa monasteries Dzogchen Gompa, just 3km away from the main road and 53km to Manigango but it is hidden in a beautiful valley. (Tib: Dzogchen) monastery, one of four important Nyingmapa Monasteries in Tibet, they are Kathork, Paiyul and Mindroling. It was built in 1684 on the advice of the 5th Dalai Lama and from its location and background with all year round snow-covered mountains, you can imagine how great and holly it was during past hundreds of years. Overnight Communication Hotel. No facility in the room, simple but it's clean.

Day 10: Manigango -  Kangze - Drago - Tawu

Before driving 110km to Kangze, going to visit the famous and beautiful Lake Yulong Lhatso located 15km from here on the way to Derge. Walking around in the Tawu old street, the highest Buddhist stupa in Tibet and natural hot spring.

Day 11: Tawu - Dartsedo

Today we driving through the rolling beautiful natural villages, Bamei earth forest, visit Lhagong monastery and walking around Dartsedo bar street.

Day 12: Dartsedo - Chengdu

Visit Jasamkha chain bridge and continues drive to Chengdu, transfer to hotel.

Day 13: End of the trip

Transfer to airport
