Lhasa, capital city of Tibet
Drak Yerpa Monastery is an important Tibetan Buddhist venue outside Lhasa. It hangs off an extraordinary cliff and has an altitude of 4885m. It is a monastery with a history of more than 1500 years! Drak Yerpa Monastery is famous for its great architecture, ancient meditation caves and the beautiful natural landscape surrounding it. Our half day Drak Yerpa meditation tour is a wonderful opportunity for you to experience a magical religious site infused with Tibetan nature.
Drak Yerpa Monastery is in the north of Dazi county. In the 7th century, the great Tibetan king Songtsan Gampo built this monastery for his wife Monza Triucham. There were originally 108 caves at Drak Yerpa, but only a few of them still remain today. Many temples were built around the cave, and later they form the famous monastery today as a whole. Drak Yerpa Monastery is a peaceful attraction and provides stunning views to its visitors. With the guidance of our English speaking local Tibetan expert, you will have an especially active, reflective and transcendent journey!
Our English speaking local Tibetan tour guide will meet you at House of Shambhala hotel lobby or Lhasa Ganggyan Hotel lobby around 9:00 AM. If you have a special request for meetup location we can happily accommodate that as well. We will then drive to Drak Yerpa Monastery, 30km outside Lhasa in the northeastern direction.
The meditation caves at Drak Yerpa Monastery bear a lot of significance because they were once visited by some of Tibet's greatest lamas and meditators for retreats. Many caves are still in use today. Once you climb to the top, you will be in awe of the surrounding views. The way of local Tibetan daily life in harmony with nature is suddenly on full display. You can also interact with local villagers and taste the potatoes that vendors sell.
After our time at Drak Yerpa, we will return to downtown Lhasa. We wish you the best on your further journey. If you had a great time with us, we welcome you to check out more Tibetan culture tours that we offer.
