Lhasa, capital city of Tibet
Norbulingka is the summer palace of Dalai Lama, and one of the must-see attractions in sacred city Lhasa. Norbulingka means “treasure garden” in Tibetan. It is in the west side of Lhasa and 3km from Potala Palace. Also the largest artificial garden in Tibet, Norbulingka is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as part of Historic Ensemble of Potala Palace.
The construction of Norbulingka began in 1755 by the 7th Dalai Lama, Kelsang Gyatso. The primary function of Norbulingka Palace was to cure the health problems of the 7th Dalai Lama. It has later become the summer residence of Dalai Lamas. The three lake palaces located in the southwest area is the most popular points of interest in the park. In the center of the lake, three islands are linked to the land by small bridges and a palace was built on each island. In addition, Norbulingka hosts celebrations of a number of Tibetan festivals. Local people especially like to gather in Norbulingka and express their happiness through singing, dancing and performing Tibetan opera.
